Chestnuts roasting on an open fire

2016-12-11-13-13-27Luke 2:8-11
“And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their
flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

You can hear the song can’t you? “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose……..” It is one of the classics of Christmas time and brings on many images of winter. The warmth and sounds and smells of the season. I haven’t ever tasted a chestnut roasted on an open fire, so I can’t describe for you the yummy taste or the amazing aroma. I have to leave that up to my imagination, or go and seek someone that has some I can roast.

How do you feel about this? – “And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.” Have you ever had an angel come to you? Or more importantly, have you ever had the glory of the Lord shine around you? What do those images bring to mind for you? Fear, awe, curiosity, or terror? For those shepherds it must have been overwhelming because it says they were filled with great fear. “The glory of the Lord”, oh my, what does that look like? What would that feel like?

If you have Christ as your Lord and Saviour, then the Holy Spirit resides ‘in” you. We might not be able to physically see the Glory of the Lord around us like the shepherds did, but it is because of His love for us and His great gift of mercy that we can be assured that He is with us. We are promised of that – 2 Tim 1:14 “By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.”

Celebrate the gift of Jesus and all that means this Christmas season, soak in the knowledge that He loves you, lives in you and walks this life each moment by your side. Oh, and if you do roast chestnuts on an open fire, if you have an extra I would love to try it. And if you don’t know Christ as your Saviour, give me a call I can help you learn more of His love for you.
