“One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much” Luke 16:10
When I was about 10 or 11 yrs old one of the jobs I had to do at home was to vacuum. I didn’t mind it actually because it was better than having to clean the toilets! One day while dancing around with the vacuum and cleaning the floors I saw a few pennies on the floor. I decided that a few pennies would only buy me a few little jaw breakers so it wasn’t worth picking up. Just as I decided to vacuum them, my Mom walked in the room. Let’s just say that all of a sudden I was caught in a rain storm of words! She told me that if I can’t be trusted with a few pennies why would I ever think I should be trusted with more. That if she couldn’t trust me to take care of the task and use responsibility why would she ever ask me to do a task that required more responsibility. She made it clear that trust and stewardship was part of being a good person, responsible young woman and most importantly a child of the King. That conversation has stuck with me for years, and years.
All the while I think the passage of scripture that I have referred to this morning has more to it than that, I believe that is a part of it as well. Now, I would like to say that following that event with my Mom that I become the best person ever at care of money. I would hate to include a lie into a reflection from God’s word so I won’t. I have made PLENTY of mistakes and really still do. Being a good steward of the money that God provides through provision of work is pretty important for many reasons. He wants us to be able to give to His work through the church and missions etc, He wants us to provide for our families and He wants us to share what we have to help others. Taking care to appreciate even the pennies and not just the millions or billions is important for us to be able to do all those things.
I am in the middle of revamping our budget over the next while, so reading through these verses was a good reminder that I need to focus on being thankful for the little things in life as well as the bigger. To take time and pray about finances and stewardship and being thankful each step of the way is all apart of being responsible. We are all a work in progress and constantly learning, lets make sure we are responsible in the little things in life too.
Have a great week!
