Before the Sword

During our motorcycle accident I was thrown and landed on my face.   The road rash I experienced was painful, but so much less than it would have been had I not been wearing my helmet.   A good helmet!   I had no broken bones and so many of the people at the site at the time were surprised that with the mess I had that there was no bones broken at all.   Why?  Well, I believe first and foremost that God had my guardian angel on duty that day for sure and she ended up in guardian angel hospital.   And, the helmet covered my cheeks and forehead in such a way that my bones were protected.

Motorcycle helmets are never on the runways of New York for models to wear, thats a for sure!.  I always felt that I looked like a chipmunk and would often complain of that.  My tune now is that I would rather look like a chipmunk that have bones broken.  I chose to wear a good helmet that day not knowing the adversity that would come our way a few hours later.

In Ephesians 6 the description of the armour of God includes a helmet, the helmet of salvation.

“and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,  praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication”

Ephesians 6:17, 18

These verses include both the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit.   That isn’t by accident.   A soldier can be in full armour but without orders from the king as to the battle plan, the armour is but fashion.  In the battle against satan we need to know we are covered by the blood of the living Saviour.  That blood was shed for our salvation that is not only important the day we open our lives to Him, and the day we die, but it is an important fact every day of our life.  It is current and active in our life everyday we have breath.   The Sword of the Spirit is the battle plan, the bible is the word of God, our instruction, direction and assurance that we are not in the battle alone.   Make careful note that the helmet of salvation and sword of the Spirit are being instructed to “take”.  They are not forced on us, but we are given the choice to take them up and then notice what we are to do.   “Praying at all times in the Spirit with all prayer and supplication”.  This isn’t a one time battle, it is continuous, we are to consult our King at all times by talking to Him.

We can face that battle with such assurance that Jesus is our salvation and that He has provided us with the words of the Bible.   They are given as a gift that we must open to receive the full benefit.    Without opening our bible and reading and learning and seeking we miss the fullness of the gift we are given so freely at great cost to the one who gave it.   We need to see that by taking the helmet and the sword that praying and seeking after God in this battle that we will be prepared to withstand the winds that blow into our lives that cause great worry.  Take comfort friends that Jesus is with you.   In this hard time with our family I have to constantly pull myself back to my bible.  It is easier to worry but so pointless when we have a saviour who longs to hear our wows and worries.  The bible has given me such comfort over the past months and I am so thankful for how Jesus uses it in my life to comfort me and direct me.

When we go into the day with our helmet and sword, we might not look like the most fashionable.  Christianity has never been main stream fashion, and often times brings with it ridicule, but we can lean into the fact that we are under the protection of the loving Saviour who has given us the gift of salvation and the blessing of His word.   Pray, read and trust that your “bones” are protected when the adversities come along.   He is faithful, your helmet and sword in place will be used to protect you.  All you have to do is put it on.

Love, Hugs n Prayers
