Memories of Mom – Book Surprise

Almost everyone of Mom’s children and grandchildren received what was affectionately referred to as a “Grammy ” letter.  They were always filled with advice and wisdom and peppered with love for the recipient and for Jesus.   I used to love to get her letters, mostly.   I remember getting one when I was younger where she put me in my place about something and I didn’t like it, mostly because she was right!

With Mom’s passing it has meant going through her things and deciding what should happen to all these treasures.   The biggest surprise and treasure is a book and many poems we found that Mom had written.   I am not all the way through yet and emotionally can only handle to read a bit at a time.   You can tell where she was going to continue in a thought in her story, but didn’t get the opportunity to finish.   With what I have read so far I can hear her voice in my heart and find comfort.  My tears come not only from missing her so much, but also from her sharing some difficult times and I get overwhelmed as I remember watching her go through some of those times.

As a family we didn’t know she had written this, so this is a special treasure.   I was going to write out the cover letter she left, but that is truly a personal message from her to us as a family.   Here is one of the poems that she wrote that I would like to share.

“My Pen”  by Mary Hobbis 1972

Lord, make my pen your instrument,

My heart your dwelling place,

My mind the scroll on which you write,

My spirit your channel of grace.

As I take this emotional journey, I will take a few minutes to blog some of the treasures within.   Her love for Jesus poured out of her life and in reading this book we are entrenched in her heart and love for Jesus and us as a family.

When I would get weary in life and emotions, stresses and trials would be like a hound at my heart, Mom would often quote this verse.   So today I will leave it with you to contemplate too.

Philippians 4:8

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

I love you Mom, thank you for continuing to teach me through availing your heart to us as a family and to the Lord for His use of your Pen.
