I remember where I was, who I was with and what we we doing on September 11, 2001, and I am guessing that you likely do as well. My nephew phoned and said on the phone to my sister that he was sure we were now at war and for us to turn on the TV. We did and what we saw we could not believe… we sat in Silence and then tears. The World Trade Tower had been attacked!
The world as we knew it changed that day, the countries where we felt safe suddenly felt vulnerable. Many MANY lives were lost and so many families lives were broken… the loss of the loved ones would have created a Silence in their homes where their loved ones voice once was.
The world continued to spin, the stars to shine and the winds to blow and yet to many who were there to clean up and try and find a way to rescue those trapped and to recover bodies, and remove debris their lives were changed forever. The world around them continued to carry on as they worked to try and take care of what was left after those horrific attacks. I spoke to someone that was on ground zero during the clean up, something he said to me rings in my thoughts. He said that their was an eerie silence in the areas he was during the clean up. It wasn’t like quiet because of machines, etc and creaking noises, it was like absence… silence”
Today commemorates 18 years since that horrible day. I would like to acknowledge all those that were directly and indirectly involved in the rescue, recovery and clean up of the aftermath. I would like to acknowledge their families as well as the families of those that lost their lives that day. The silence that is here this morning in the quiet of my home is one of quiet prayer to God for each of them. I don’t have names but I believe that God knows them closely. My prayer is for peace for them on this day as they remember.
